Each file in a compressed file is listed as a separate item in the Files tab. When a user attempts to launch a file in a compressed file, the compressed file opens. Changes to file indexing options are picked up when X1 updates its indexes. A complete file re-index is no longer necessary.

  • You can now open multiple files in the Files tab by selecting them in the List Pane and clicking the "Open" button in the View Pane.
• Other
  • X1 now has a free trial of all of its features rather than a free forever basic product and a Pro product.

  • Added clearer indexing status information to the Status Bar, as well as extensive status information during a user's initial indexing period (via messages in the View Pane).

  • X1 can now tell when a user has no Internet connection, and doesn't does not prompt the user to connect to the Internet. However, Web searches by the user still activate this prompt.
  • Added warning message when an index approaches the 2GB size limit. The message encourages users to turn off indexing of a tab or reindex that tab.
  • The Index New Files and Index New Email buttons are now labeled Update File Index and Update Email Index since those buttons not only add new email and files but also update the existing indexes to catch deletions or modifications.
  • Added a "Subject" column to the Attachments tab. It lists the subject line of the email message associated with the attachment.
  • Automatic import of IE favorites and history into X1 Favorites and History tabs. The Favorites tab does not import Internet Explorer's default bookmarks. It only imports Internet Explorer bookmarks specified by the user.
  • "Open File", "Open Email" and "Print" buttons are now above the View Pane in the Attachments tab.
  • Ctrl-C copies selected text in the View Pane to the clipboard as tab-delimited text. Handy for pasting into a spreadsheet!
  • You can now right-click in the List Pane to print email messages, files and attachments.

• Crashes
  • X1 could not be installed on Windows 98/ME systems without crashing.
  • "List Index Out of Bounds (5)" crash.
  • "Access violation at address 0015B848" crash. (If you saw this crash, you must reindex your email to take advantage of the fix.)
  • Dragging the tabs on Win 98/ME systems caused an immediate crash.
  • "Unspecified error" crash when clicking Refresh on History tab.
  • "Stream read error" crash when Outlook Express index merged.
  • "Cannot create file C:\Documents and Settings\PC-22\Application Data\Findwell\favorite-recovery.dat" crash.
  • "Forgot to call AddToIndex" crash during email indexing.
• Web Tab Bugs
  • Inputting URL in Web tab Address field failed to load page.
  • The image of a Web page in the View Pane of the Web tab would carry over into the View Pane of all other tabs, such as Email and Files.
  • Focus was lost while typing in the Web tab search field if results from a previous search were still loading.
  • While arrowing through the Web tab results list, arrow keystrokes were sometimes ignored because focus in the List Pane was lost to the View Pane.
  • Google searches did not work if the "new window" preference in Google was enabled.
• Email Tab Bugs
  • The Outlook scanner wouldn't detect deleted folders.
  • Constant requests to reconnect to Microsoft Exchange after the user canceled the first request to connect.
  • X1 would run slowly and hog resources if it lost its connection to Microsoft Exchange.
  • For Microsoft Outlook Exchange profiles that were not the default profile, X1 did not preserve the session, so the user would be prompted to connect to Outlook Exchange for each incremental email scan. Now the Outlook Exchange connection is preserved throughout each X1 session.
  • Moving large numbers of email messages from folder to folder would quickly cause X1's email index to reach the 2GB size limit.
• Docking/Autohide Bugs
  • When in autohide mode, X1 would sometimes steal focus from other applications.
  • Changing from undocked to docked mode disabled column search fields and the divider bar.
  • In docked mode, when the user had another program docked as well, X1 would "shake" the whole desktop and generally behave badly.
• Other Bugs
  • Typing a search term very quickly could cause no results to appear even though the search term matched results if typed more slowly.
  • The Attachments tab reappeared once turned off in the Set Visible Tabs option.
  • Double clicking on folders in the Files tab would give a message saying the folder had been deleted and would be removed from the X1 index. Now double clicking on folders in the Files tab opens the folder.

• Crash during web search.
• Fixed bug where dragging tabs in Windows 98SE or Windows ME would cause an immediate crash.

• Fixed frequent startup crash for Windows 98SE and Windows ME users.

• X1's advanced file viewer is now the default file viewer during the first 30 days of use of the free version of X1.

• On Windows 98 and ME, 30 search results are returned instead of 5, and 30 favorites can be added instead of 5.
• Added additional logging to try to solve the most common crash bug in the previous version (429zq).

• Added an installation wizard.
• After upgrading to a new version of X1, the license agreement and the options dialog box no longer pop up.

• Possible reduction in X1's memory and CPU use on 98/ME machines.

• The X1 executable is now x1.exe instead of find.exe.
• "Unspecified error" crashes in the Web tab. (Possible fix.)
• X1 responded slowly to the first few letters of any search term entered in the Files, Email, or Attachments tab. To take advantage of this fix, re-index your email and files. To do so, click the Options button and select "Re-index All Files" in the Files Search tab and "Re-index Email" in the Email Search tab.
• If Windows was shut down before X1 was closed, X1 often lost any file indexing completed during that session.
• "Access violation at address 0049383B" crashes.
• "Access violation at address 00401D30" crashes. (Possible fix.)

• In the Web tab, pop-up windows required by Web pages, forms and links did not work.
• Installation of X1 directly after an uninstall failed.
• After a crash, the Favorites tab failed to recover its list of saved pages, and then X1 crashed the next time a favorite was added.
• Parentheses in search terms caused invalid search results. Now parentheses in searches are ignored.
• Outlook error messages sometimes appeared when reindexing or selecting folders. Now these errors are recorded in the emailscan.log file and do not appear as messages.
• Users with Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail Only mode experienced "Access Violation" crashes (at address 3552E82B or 7BB77457).

• Completed an optimization to Microsoft Outlook Exchange email indexing.
• Windows 98 and ME users were unable to upgrade to new versions of X1 without completely uninstalling.
• A "Stream read error" crash. (Possible fix.)

General Changes

• The product formerly known as Find is now X1.
• X1 is now free. There is no longer a 15 day trial. Advanced features available by purchasing X1 Pro.
• X1 can be installed from a network directory.
• Reinstalling after uninstalling no longer requires a reboot after the uninstall.

• X1 Pro now indexes the filename, file size, sender name, date and file type of Outlook attachments.
• X1 Pro users can select network folders and choose how those files should be indexed.
• X1 Pro displays files in their proper format. For example, Excel spreadsheets look like spreadsheets and Word documents look like Word documents. (X1 displays all file contents as text).

• Incremental indexing of files is off by default. It can be turned on in the Options dialog box. This makes Find faster for users who found incremental indexing caused their computers to be too slow.
• File indexing is limited to file types (based on extension) that generally have text to index. You can add file extensions using the File Search tab in Options. Once you add a file extension to this list, you'll have to rescan all of your files to see the content of files with that extension in your results.
• Incremental indexing of email has been added for Netscape, Eudora, and Outlook Express. It is on by default, but you can turn it off in the Options dialog box.
• Putting the minus (-) symbol in front of a search term performs a negative search on that word, meaning it excludes any results containing that word.
• Any punctuation after a word except an apostrophe (') forces an exact word search if followed by a space. So, if you search for "art. ", you will only get matches for "art". If you search for "art" you will get results containing "art", "artist", "arthur" and so forth.
• The plus and minus keys (+/-) move up and down the left List Pane and they move to the next or previous search term in the right View Pane.
• In Files mode, the right-click option labeled "Locate on Disk" opens the directory (using Windows Explorer) containing the selected file.
• In Autohide mode, Find waits a fraction of a second in response to the presence of the mouse at the top of the screen. This helps prevent Find from appearing unintentionally.
• In Files mode, Ctrl-F in the right View Pane pops up the standard Windows Find dialog box. F3 is the standard "Next" key.
• In Files mode, Ctrl-A does a "select all" in the right View Pane.
• In Web mode, Ctrl-N pops up your default browser in a separate window, with the page displayed in Find's right View Pane loaded.
• Added a link to a Help file in the bottom right corner of the interface.
• In the left List Pane, added a bold line that shows where a column will be dropped when it is being dragged to a new location.

• Email search has been added, which also searches the content of email!
• Column-based search of email, so you can narrow your search by entering search terms which will act as filters in the From, Subject, Date and Time search fields.
• The functionality of the Findbar on your taskbar has been integrated with the main search field of Find. The Findbar no longer exists on your Taskbar.
• A new button lets you shrink Find to just the top header, and to then bring it back to its maximized state.
• Another new button lets you quickly get rid of the left list pane so you can see your result in full screen view, and then toggle back to the left pane.
• New shortcut key to the Find search field: anywhere you are, use the shortcut key to move your cursor focus to the Findbar. The default shortcut key is ctrl-shift-f, and you can change that in the options dialog box (F2).
• Disk and Web checkboxes have been moved to a "Mode" dropdown box that lets you choose between Disk, Web and Email search modes.

• When a new web page is launched from Find, a new Internet Explorer window is always opened, rather than making use of pre-existing, open Internet Explorer windows.
